How to Build a Salt Supply Continuity and Disruption Plan

Salt supply chains can be affected by port congestion, weather, production schedules, packaging-material availability or transport capacity. A continuity plan should be built before a disruption occurs.
Separate risks by source
Production, raw material, packaging, inland transport, port, ocean freight, customs and destination warehousing risks should be tracked separately so alternative actions are visible.
Identify critical products
Not every SKU has the same business impact. Process salt that can stop production may need different safety-stock and escalation rules from a slow-moving retail item.
Develop alternate routes and second sources
Dual sourcing is more than finding another company. The alternate product, packaging compatibility and logistics route should be qualified before an emergency.
Manage seasonal risk through forecasting
Seasonal products such as deicing salt can experience sharp demand peaks. Pre-season forecasts, reserved capacity and call-off plans can reduce emergency purchasing.
Define escalation rules
Who is informed, when, and with what data when a delay becomes likely? A clear escalation matrix reduces last-minute surprises.
