A low price per tonne does not always produce the lowest total import cost. Landed cost considers the relevant costs required to bring the goods to the buyer’s chosen destination.

Product and packaging

Private-label packaging, cartons, pallets and special materials may be separate from the base product price. Confirm exactly what the quotation includes.

Origin and freight

Inland origin transport, port charges and main carriage can fall to different parties depending on the Incoterm. Compare offers on the same delivery basis.

Destination costs

Terminal charges, customs clearance, inland delivery, storage and local taxes can materially affect total cost and vary by market.

Container utilization changes unit freight

Palletization and actual net payload affect freight per tonne. With dense cargo such as salt, weight limits can be critical.

Simple landed-cost structure

  • Product + packaging
  • Origin charges
  • Main freight
  • Insurance where applicable
  • Destination charges
  • Customs/taxes
  • Inland delivery
  • Storage/finance where relevant
