Handling Shortage, Wet Cargo and Damage Claims in Salt Shipments

When wet bags, torn sacks or quantity discrepancies are found at destination, evidence collected during the first hours is often more valuable than later explanations. The first objective is to document the event accurately, then evaluate responsibility and remedy under the contract.
Record the container before opening
Photograph the container number, seal number, exterior condition and any visible damage. If the seal does not match, confirm the appropriate procedure with the carrier or relevant party before opening.
Maintain an evidence trail during unloading
Wet areas, torn packages, pallet damage, collapse and product loss should be recorded systematically. Pallet- or lot-level documentation is more useful than random photos.
Make shortage measurable
Record missing bag count, damaged package count, representative weights and total loss in the same report. Numeric data is preferable to general estimates.
Investigate moisture without jumping to conclusions
Condensation, packaging barrier failure, punctured bags or external water ingress can produce different patterns. Record observations separately before assigning cause.
Tie the claim file to the contract
Notification deadlines, required evidence, survey requirements and commercial remedies vary with the PO, carriage contract and insurance terms. Buyers should know the relevant timelines before an incident occurs.
