For ocean salt shipments, container weight is not only a freight-cost issue; it is also a safety input for vessel stowage. Because salt is a dense cargo, product weight, packaging, pallets, dunnage and container tare need to be managed as one loading calculation.

What is VGM?

Under SOLAS, the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of a packed container must be established before loading. IMO describes verified gross mass as a mandatory safety requirement. The operational method should be aligned with the carrier, terminal and applicable national procedures.

Why is it important for salt cargo?

A salt container can approach its payload limit before the available cubic volume is fully used. Buyers and suppliers should therefore check gross mass before optimizing bag count or pallet count.

Which weights should be tracked?

The loading file should reconcile net product weight, packaging weight, pallets, protective materials or dunnage, and container tare. ERP/loading-list values should be checked against the final weighing process.

What should the buyer confirm?

The RFQ or purchase order should identify planned net cargo weight, estimated gross cargo, package count, pallet count, container type and which party manages the VGM submission process.

Define weight tolerances commercially

Nominal pack weight and commercial shipment net weight are separate control points. The specification should define which weight is used for invoicing, receiving inspection and shortage claims.
