How Bulk Rock Salt Export Prices Are Calculated

There is no single international answer to “What is the price per tonne of rock salt?” The same salt can produce a different total cost depending on particle size, packaging, quantity and delivery basis. Buyers need to understand what each quotation includes.
1. Product and processing cost
Raw material selection, screening, crushing or milling, target granulation and quality-control requirements can influence base cost. Tight tolerances may require a different production plan from standard material.
2. Packaging cost
Commercial bags, multi-layer bags, retail packs, cartons and printed private-label packaging have different cost structures. Print runs and custom materials can also affect MOQ.
3. Pallets and loading
Pallets, stretch/shrink wrap, edge protection, labor and container loading may form part of the price. Confirm whether pallets are included.
4. Order quantity
Setup and packaging costs are distributed differently across a pallet, several tonnes and a full container. MOQ and target volume should therefore be evaluated together.
5. Incoterm and freight
EXW, FOB, CFR and CIF cover different cost and responsibility scopes. Incoterms® 2020 remains the current ICC edition. Freight quotations require a named port or place. Source: ICC Incoterms® Rules.
6. Documentation and destination-market requirements
Special analyses, certificates, origin documents or additional labeling can add project cost and should be identified before quotation.
Do not compare FOB and CIF as if they are identical
FOB and CIF quotations include different responsibilities and cost elements. Compare supplier offers on the same delivery basis and named place.
Think in landed cost
The importer’s total cost may include product, packaging, origin charges, freight, insurance where applicable, destination terminal charges, customs, inland transport and local taxes. Exact items depend on the contract and country.
