The lowest price per tonne does not automatically identify the best rock salt supplier. A reliable supply relationship depends on clearly defined specifications, consistency between samples and commercial lots, suitable packaging, relevant documentation and realistic logistics planning.

1. Start with a written product specification

A professional supplier should be able to define the product by intended application, particle size, physical form, packaging and relevant analytical parameters. Buyers should compare quotations against the same written specification.

2. Ask what the sample represents

Samples are useful for initial assessment, but the commercial requirement is consistency with the agreed specification. Confirm whether the sample represents the same grain size, processing and packaging configuration planned for the shipment.

3. Evaluate laboratory documentation properly

Check which sample or batch the report represents, the analytical method, units and whether the laboratory is competent for the requested scope. A long list of detected elements is not a substitute for application-specific acceptance criteria.

4. Review packaging and private-label capability

Standard bags, retail packs, cartons, pallets and private-label programs require different production setups. Custom artwork, barcode, language and carton requirements should be discussed before pricing is finalized.

5. Confirm logistics capability

Pallet dimensions, gross weight, container type, loading method, origin point and delivery term all affect total landed cost. For FOB, CFR or CIF quotations, a named port is essential.

6. Compare quotations on the same basis

  • Same specification
  • Same package and net weight
  • Same order quantity
  • Same Incoterm and named place
  • Comparable documentation scope

For repeat business, responsiveness, change control and consistency across shipments should also form part of supplier evaluation.
