How to Define Acceptance Limits and Tolerances in a Bulk Salt Specification

'Good quality salt' is not a measurable purchase requirement. To reduce commercial disputes, the specification should define which attributes are tested, how they are measured and what acceptance range applies.
Select critical quality attributes first
Do not add parameters simply because they are available. Choose the attributes that affect the intended use. Food, process, deicing and private-label products can have different critical controls.
Do not leave grain size as a marketing word
Terms such as fine or coarse can be supported by sieve ranges and acceptance criteria where needed. Both parties should use a compatible measurement method.
Analytical method matters for chemical limits
A limit for NaCl, moisture or another parameter is incomplete if different methods can produce different results. Define a reference method or an agreed laboratory approach.
Packaging and weight belong in the specification
Packaging material, nominal weight, print, lot code, closure and pallet configuration can all be acceptance criteria.
Define what happens to an out-of-spec result
Retest, second sample, independent laboratory or claim steps can be agreed in advance so post-shipment disputes are handled consistently.
