Rock Salt Grain Sizes: Choosing the Right Granulation

Granulation is often as important as price in bulk rock salt purchasing. Terms such as fine, granular and coarse are useful for initial communication, but production and packing operations usually benefit from a defined particle-size range.

Why particle size matters

Grain size can influence flow, dissolution, grinder performance, packing-line behavior and final product appearance. The same salt can therefore be requested in different granulations for different markets.

Fine, granular and coarse are not universal dimensions

There is no single worldwide millimetre definition for these commercial terms. Suppliers may use different internal ranges. Buyers should state a target mm range or sieve distribution in the RFQ whenever particle size is critical.

Match granulation to the application

• Fine/table applications: filling and visual uniformity may matter
• Grinder products: mill geometry and target size are important
• Brining/process use: dissolution time and process design may matter
• Industrial use: feeding equipment and process requirements dominate
• Deicing: spreading equipment and operational needs should be considered

Use samples and sieve data

Visual sample inspection is useful, but sieve analysis provides a more measurable acceptance criterion for critical projects. Agree tolerances before commercial production.

Packaging and flow behavior

Very fine and coarse materials can behave differently in the same filling equipment. Consider flow behavior for small packs, bags, big bags and automated lines.
