Food Grade Rock Salt Specifications for International Buyers

The term “food grade” is not a complete purchasing specification by itself. Importers and food manufacturers should define composition, particle size, physical requirements, packaging, analytical scope and destination-market rules according to the intended application.

International reference: Codex CXS 150-1985

The Codex Alimentarius Standard for Food Grade Salt (CXS 150-1985, amended in 2025) describes food-grade salt as a crystalline product consisting predominantly of sodium chloride and obtained from the sea, underground rock salt deposits or natural brine. It specifies a minimum NaCl content of 97% on a dry-matter basis, exclusive of additives. Destination-country rules still need separate verification. Source: Codex Alimentarius.

What should a purchasing specification contain?

• Product name and intended application
• NaCl acceptance criterion
• Particle size / sieve distribution
• Moisture or loss-on-drying limit where relevant
• Insoluble matter or other quality parameters where required
• Requested contaminant or element tests
• Additive/iodization status where relevant
• Packaging and labelling requirements

Particle size affects process performance

Two products with similar composition can behave differently if particle-size distribution differs. Filling, dissolution, grinding and process performance may therefore require a defined sieve range rather than only “fine” or “coarse.”

Analytical scope should match the market

Not every buyer needs the same test panel. Required parameters should be selected according to application, customer specification and the importing market. Reports should be traceable to the relevant sample or batch.

Packaging belongs in the specification

Food-contact packaging requirements, bag construction, net weight, closure method, pallet configuration and label language should be agreed alongside the product specification.

Practical purchasing approach

Attach a concise product specification sheet to the RFQ. This reduces the risk of receiving a technically different quotation and makes sample approval more meaningful.
