How Importers Should Evaluate Rock Salt Samples and Lab Reports

Samples and laboratory reports are useful purchasing tools, but a report with many numbers does not automatically prove superior quality or suitability. Analytical results should be interpreted against the agreed purchasing specification.

Confirm what the sample represents

Ask which granulation, processing route and, where applicable, batch or stock the sample represents. If the commercial order will use a different particle size or package, define what the sample approval actually covers.

Ask about the analytical method

The same parameter may be measured using different instruments and methods. Where material to the purchase decision, buyers can request the method, sample preparation, dilution approach and reporting limits.

Check units carefully

mg/kg, ppm, µg/kg and ppb can easily be confused and lead to major interpretation errors. Read each result together with its unit and any detection or reporting limit.

Accreditation and scope

A laboratory being accredited does not necessarily mean every test it performs is included in its accredited scope. For critical parameters, buyers can ask whether the specific method is within scope and can request information on calibration and quality-control practices where relevant.

Detection does not equal nutritional relevance

Sensitive instruments can detect elements at very low concentrations. Detection alone does not demonstrate meaningful nutritional contribution or a health benefit. Commercial acceptance should be based on agreed limits and product specifications.

COA and batch traceability

For repeat shipments, define how the Certificate of Analysis or equivalent quality document relates to the production lot and how that lot can be identified on packaging or shipping documents.
